Built in 1865, the Burketown Inn was originally the Van Pelt General Store, serving the needs of travelers along what is today Route 11 (Lee Highway). Sheridan’s last raid, which wreaked much havoc on the south, began just a couple of miles north of the Inn along Route 11 and continued all the way to Georgia leaving miles of burnt farmland in its wake.

The building itself has evolved over its 130 plus years as a store, inn, antique auction house, and private home. While the Inn was completely renovated in 2002, its well preserved floors and original woodwork and trim, evident uneven ceilings and varied doors add to the charm of this great house.
